The Financial Administration has issued a public warning about a renewed surge of fraudulent schemes that employ email, SMS or counterfeit websites to impersonate the tax authority. Scammers typically claim that recipients have outstanding tax debts, are eligible for tax refunds, or must provide personal banking details to avoid penalties. The messages often include urgent language, links to malicious sites, or attachments that install malware. The Administration stresses that it never requests sensitive personal information such as passwords, PINs or full bank account numbers through these channels. Citizens are advised to verify the authenticity of any communication by contacting the official helpline or visiting the official website directly, rather than clicking on links or downloading attachments. The notice also outlines steps to take if one has already shared data, including reporting the incident to the police and monitoring accounts for unauthorized activity. By raising awareness, the Administration aims to protect the public from financial loss and identity theft associated with these phishing attempts.
